Classic PancakeHealthy Classic Pancake

This healthy pancake recipe from BBC Good Food swaps out plain flour for wholemeal or wholegrain flour as a high fibre alternative. Wholemeal flour also has a lower glycaemic index which helps to reduce spikes in blood sugar levels that are commonly linked to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Whole eggs have been substituted for egg whites giving these pancakes a fluffy texture and reduced fat content.

Cheesy Pancakes with Ham and Leeks

Although it’s a lot higher in fat than the recipes above, this savoury dish from Delicious Magazine would make the perfect high protein pancake day dinner. If you’d prefer a lower fat alternative then try swapping out full-fat cheese for reduced fat, use almond or soy milk instead of cow’s milk and instead of butter for greasing you could use low-fat spray oil.

Leeks are from the allium family and have numerous health benefits such as high dietary fibre, vitamin B6, iron and vitamins A, C and K. Spinach also is a great source of iron which plays a central role in the function of the red blood cells.

Sweetcorn, Feta and Spring Onion Pancakes

Last on our list are these savoury pancakes from Olive Magazine that can be eaten individually as a healthy snack, or stacked with some grilled bacon for a super tasty dinner.

This recipe uses a number of ingredients that provide health benefits. Sweetcorn is packed with lutein and zeaxanthin, both of which promote healthy vision. As well as this, corn promotes weight loss and the insoluble fibre feeds good bacteria in your gut, aiding in digestion.

Spring onions, similarly to leek, are part of the allium family and share many of the same benefits that leeks do.

In comparison to other cheeses, feta cheese is low in calories and fat. It also contains a high amount of B vitamins and calcium, promoting healthy bones. However, feta cheese is quite high in salt so be aware of your portion sizes.
